Matsusaka beef is one of the top two branded wagyu in Japan. Every November, there is annual Matsusaka Beef Contest held in Matsusaka, Mie. 50 premium Matsusaka cattle chosen in the preliminary contest compete in this contest, and the best cattle will be regarded as “Queen of Matsusaka”. The auction of the Queen of Matsusaka and other winning cattle is held right after the contest.
This year was 70th anniversary, and the Queen was given to a cattle named Itsuko, which was auctioned at 26 million JPY (236,364 USD*). The price was more than four times higher than that of 2nd ranked Matsusaka cattle, which was auctioned at 6.2 million JPY (56,364 USD*).
The Queen of Matsusaka’s price is roughly same as buying a house; she is definitely one of the most expensive wagyu beef in Japan!
*USD is calculated 1 USD = 110 JPY
